Peechi Vazhani Wildlife
Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 20 km east of Thrisur district of the evergreen Indian state of Kerala. The sanctuary was established in 1958, and its headquarter is in Peechi. It includes the forests of Palappilli-Nelliyampathi, that cover a large area of Chimminy Wildlife Sanctuary. Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over a huge area of 125 sq km. Throughout the year you will find the pleasant atmosphere in the sanctuary, as it is located in the lap of lush green forest areas and the beautiful hills, which varies from the altitude of 45 m to 900 m. Ponmudi is the highest peak of this region with an elevation of 923 m. Such favorable conditions create an ideal habitat for the flora and fauna.
The sanctuary is the rich blend of tropical evergreen forest, tropical semi-evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests, enriched by different kinds of flora. As in evergreen forests, trees like Kalpine, Kambakam, Karakil, Whiteakil and Ambani are found. While in moist leaves shedding forests, trees like Irul, Rosewood, Teak, Venteak and Thenmavu are seen.
Besides these, sanctuary is blessed with more than 50 orchids and plenty of medicinal plants.
Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary houses around 25 species of mammals, more than 60 species of birds and 30 species of reptiles including 10 varieties of snakes.
Fox, Leoperd, Tiger, elks, herds of spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Slender Loris etc.
According to a recent survey, conducted by Ornithology, several new species of birds are found out here. Fish Eagle, Large Hawk Cuckoo, Broad-billed Roller, House Martin and Ashy Minivet etc. are some of them.
Along with adventurous wildlife trip, you may also enjoy the mesmerizing boating facilities in the lake, inside the sanctuary.
