About the HospitalThiruvanthapuram Medical College was the first famous Government Medical College headed by Shri Pattam Thanu Pillai at Thiruvanthapuram after he saw that aspiring medical professionals did not have many colleges to study and when the Senate of the Travancore University pressurized to set a separate medical college.

Dr C.O.Karunakaran "Father of Trivandrum Medical College" was the one who worked day and night to achieve the target of establishing a medical college at Thiruvanthapuram. With the help of Government, the college was established and inaugurated by Late Pandit Jawarhar Lal Nehru. Seats at medical college were reserved for scheduled castes and tribes. By giving admission to the students of scheduled castes and tribes, the social barrier exerted on them was somewhat removed.
Hostels for men and women, Nursing College, Dental College, Pharmacy College, Regional Cancer Centre, Artificial Limb Centre, Sree Chithra Institute of Medical Education, Residential Quarters for the staff etc. were developed in the campus of Thiruvanthapuram Medical College. Besides the MBBS course, PG degree and diploma courses in 22 specialties, super specialty courses in 10 specialties, BSc. Nursing, B Pharm, B.Sc MLT, Para Medical Courses, Diploma in Pharmacy course etc. are conducted in this institution. Most of the Departments of medical Education Service are actively engaged in Clinical research in various subjects.
